Less Than Perfect

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Video of the Macworld Live panel I did with John Gruber, Guy English, Paul Kafasis, and Glenn Fleishman about what we dislike in our favorite apps. Hosted by the bizarrely tall Lex Friedman.

Some Assembly Required

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

An oldie but goodie from my friend (and employer) Daniel Pasco about perspective: Unlike other hobbyist computers of its day, which were sold as kits, the Apple I was a fully assembled circuit board containing about 30 chips. However, to make a working computer, users still had to add a case, ...

HP Fingers a New Logo

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Brand New has a piece on HP's new (possible) logo. My first thought… I actually like the new logo. It's clean, fun, simple, and digital. You could argue that it's a little too digital in a barcode sort of way, but overall it's a step up.

The Condescending UI

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Paul Miller at The Verge makes some interesting arguments about the state of UI design, particularly with regards to trends like skeuomorphism. He poses thoughtful questions, provides images to back his assertions, and demonstrates that he has clearly given this subject a lot of consideration. Then he gets to the last ...

Turning Hardware Into Software

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

James Higgs rips into Apple over the disparity between clean hardware design and overly-textured software. It should probably be obvious that my own preference is for design without ornamentation, certainly without a hint of sentimentality, and that I detest these new apps. Why? Simply put: it's because they are lies. They ...

Smart Objects

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Speaking of design advice, Bjango has a great writeup of how smart objects work in Photoshop and Illustrator.

Apple Pie

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Addison Duvall suggests looking to apple pie for design inspiration. Money quote: There are plenty of things you can put on top of a pie: ice cream, sugar, whipped cream, syrup, cookies, cherries – the list goes on and on. Some people might think this makes the pie taste better, but ...

Speak With Conviction

Excellent poem (and typographical video) from Taylor Mali about the heartbreakingly persistent trend of tonally apologizing for everything we say. (Via Kerry)

Texture Star

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

New texture resource for designers, via Caleb Kimbrough at Lost and Taken: Texturestar is basically going to be like Woot, except instead of robot vacuums we'll be selling one exclusive texture pack everyday, for super cheap. Each texture pack will only be available for 24 hours then it will be retired ...

Dribbble

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

I'm on Dribbble, which is sort of a show-and-tell site for designers. Thanks to NDAs, it's hard for me to show off much of what I do at my day job, but I'll post what I can. Meanwhile, at Louie's suggestion, I'm making some fan art-type stuff to keep myself ...

How to Use KeyGrinder

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Jay Graves wrote up a helpful explanation of what KeyGrinder is and how it works. I may have moved to a different company, but I still use KeyGrinder every day.

• NetNewsWire

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

People sometimes ask how I got into software design. Easy, because of NetNewsWire. Years ago, I delivered pizza to make money. Not much, of course, and most of what I did make went into my gas tank. I was broke, eating pizza for every meal and sleeping on the floor in ...

Hype

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Speaking of friends with game-changing apps, Ryan Nielsen's company Tumult has released Hype, an HTML5 animation builder for the Mac. Even if you don't plan to use it, Hype stands a good chance of changing the web animation landscape and helping to displace Flash.
