The Problem With the App Store
Alex King nails it:
If developers could sell apps for the iPhone through their web sites, with download links to download apps direct to the device, the AppStore issues would be an annoyance; but only that.
This echoes a conversation I had earlier today. If the iPod can play music not purchased on the iTunes store, why can’t the iPhone run apps not purchased from the App Store? Obviously there’s much more opportunity for an application to cause problems, but this is no different than on the Mac.
The vast majority of users will still seek out only apps from the Apple-vetted collection, but at least the rest of us could finally shut up about it and go back to writing software.
