• Cydia Store

When Saurik announced the Cydia Store, my first reaction was: what the fuck?

After giving it some thought and examining possible use cases for such a thing, my question stands.  The jailbreak/”hacker” community has thus far been reliant on software that is free, either by design or by interference.  What on Earth would make anyone think that these people are suddenly going to want to pay for software?

Moreover, why would any jailbreaker want to pony up cash for software that is implicitly unsupportable, and could be obsoleted at any moment by Apple, a company whose App Store business is explicitly built to be a sole provider of third-party applications, and who has full control over the hardware and software platforms?

There are enough people out there willing to buy jailbreak apps, I imagine, to provide a nice first wave.  But in the long run, this isn’t sustainable.  The effort involved in keeping up with the cat-and-mouse game just isn’t worth it.
