• IM+ Raises Security Concerns (Updated)

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Following my first look at IM+, I got an interesting email from Scott A. McIntyre, security officer for XS4ALL.  Scott took the time to analyze the packets that IM+ sends over air to verify my assumption that no proxying was involved.  He found that some proxying is taking place, and some ...

McCain Chooses Palin

Friday, August 29th, 2008

I picked the ABC News story because of this sentence: The Republican contender will tap first-term Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, ABC News reports. Tee hee. First-term governor?  Clearly she was chosen for her experience.

• IM+

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

What's this?  Another multi-protocol IM client for the iPhone?  IM+ just appeared on the App Store, and at the competitive price of free.  A quick look at the developer's website reveals IM+ to be a multi-platform client, with versions available for most mobile phones.  They're also based in Germany, which may explain ...

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

BBC News has a story about the Advertising Standards Authority (and thank god they exist) declaring an iPhone commercial to be misleading. "Because the iPhone doesn't support Flash or Java, you couldn't really see the internet in its full glory," said Olivia Campbell, a spokesperson for the ASA. "They made a very ...

Kotaku, on the long gap between "core" games from Nintendo: So if they take 2-3 years to make...where are the ones you started working on 2-3 years ago? As we get deeper into this hardware cycle, I become convinced that the Wii is more lucky accident than ingenious savior.  Nintendo needs some quality leadership ...

Kindle Clones

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

At first, I thought it was a joke.  TechCrunch's Michael Arrington suggests that Amazon open their Kindle e-book reader for third-party clones.  My advice to Amazon is to always do the opposite of whatever Arrington says.  Just ask Apple what clone programs do for revenue and brand identity.

• The Force Unleashed

Monday, August 25th, 2008

The demo for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed hit XBox Live last Thursday, and I finally got around to playing through it last night.  The developers were smart to give us an easy level with a lot of familiar elements.  Skipping over any hints of the prequel trilogy, the demo ...

Penny Arcade Profile

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

The Seattle Times has an interesting profile of Tycho and Gabe of Penny Arcade. "Penny Arcade" webcomics come out as stand-alone strips three times a week online, and unlike traditional newspaper strips, this one doesn't shy away from violence or cursing. In addition, the creators' real lives cross over to their virtual ...
