• Up Arrow

Unless you’re running Internet Explorer1, you may have noticed the arrow button logo at the top of the page.  The “_/” has received an unexpected degree of praise, but it seemed like something was missing.

Several concepts have been bouncing around in my head for the last month, but sitting down to put pen to Wacom last night, the following three were the ones that stood out to me.

Logo concepts

I started with option one.  The circle felt good, but everything else was so small that it would be tough to make out what you were looking at with just a glance.  I decided to remove the circle and make the elevator a little more obvious by “lighting” the up arrow and adding buttons to the side to create the third option.  The second option, the up arrow, was an accident.  It only existed so I could shrink it down and use it for the elevator buttons.

When soliciting opinions from others, the up arrow button was the overwhelming favorite.  I kept trying to nudge people to number three, since I had put so much time into it.

But the driving force behind the design of Better Elevation is simplicity.  Of course the simplest option was the right choice.
