Microsoft Pokes at Apple
From AppleInsider:
“Windows Vista has fewer than half the security vulnerabilities of Windows XP,” Microsoft said. “It’s also 60% less likely to be infected by spyware or malware than Windows XP SP2. And in early 2008, Windows Vista was shown to have 89% fewer vulnerabilities than MacOS X 10.5, making it the most secure Windows release to date.”
These numbers are impressive until you stop to think about them. 60% of what? How likely was it before? 100%? So now I’m only 40% likely to get screwed? It’s also misleading to compare vulnerabilities on numbers alone. How many of the Vista vulnerabilities were in userspace or remotely exploitable?
Most telling is that Microsoft feels the need to call Apple out at all. What happened to the confident machine that could ignore its competitors entirely while stealing their market share?
